Name/Title
1962/Mack: Meikles Hotel, Salisbury, RhodesiaScope and Content
Postcard sent by "Pat and Tony", not related to the Mack family. Included here because it shows very well the 1958 extension of Meikles Hotel in the early 1960s. In 1962, Peter, Marion, and Richard stayed here while Christine and Jennie stayed at Trixie's house.
The text on the back of the postcard describes the same early 1960s flight route as taken by Peter, Marion, and their family in July 1962. This ran from London to Salisbury, via Rome, Khartoum (mentioned here only as "dawn came up over the Sudan"), Nairobi, and finally Salisbury.
The postcard mentions the rains having started (generally, November to April).
The stamp has been removed, destroying the date, but the "S. Rhodesia" stamp narrows down the time frame. Southern Rhodesia was part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which was dissolved on December 31, 1963 when the protectorates of Northern Rhodesia (thereafter named Zambia) and Nyasaland (thereafter named Malawi) moved towards independence. In 1964 the self-governing Southern Rhodesia renamed itself as Rhodesia. It became Zimbabwe in 1980.
