1962/Mack: With Evan Campbell

Name/Title

1962/Mack: With Evan Campbell

Description

Photograph from a slide, with colour degradation. Standing up, centre, is Evan Campbell (later High Commissioner for Rhodesia, 1964-66); to his left is Peter Mack; far left, Richard with someone whose face cannot be made out. Driver unknown but probably one of Campbell's employees. On the bonnet: Jennie nearest the camera, Christine at the back. Photograph taken at Campbell's very large estate, Zunedza, Inyazura, in the Makoni District of Manicaland Province, about 45 miles from Umtali. In 1958 Campbell employed 130-150 people on the estate, and, as a benevolent employer, had set up a clinic for his workforce, which also catered for his neighbours. It had as many as 500 outpatients a month, and two four-bed wards for inpatients (see PDF entitled "The Farm Clinic at Zunedza, near Inyazura, S. Rhodesia"). In "The Golden Weed", Peter Mack writes that the founder and chairman of the Tobacco Export Promotion Council, formed in 1958, was Evan Campbell, "who had long experience as an important tobacco grower and who made a name for himself in tobacco association work". (p.22). Campbell became High Commissioner for Rhodesia in 1964, the year before UDI was declared. He did not support UDI and therefore Ian Smith, the Prime Minister of Rhodesia, sacked him.
