Name/Title

1963/Chalmers: 1st Day cover for Tobacco Trade Conference

Description

First International Tobacco Trade Conference, 6-16 March 1963, held at Salisbury in (Southern) Rhodesia. Tobacco was a major Rhodesian export. It was targeted (as well as the much less valuable commodity, sugar) once UDI was declared in 1965. The British prime minister, Harold Wilson, said that this was because the tobacco farmers had a malign influence over events while tobacco was the core of the Rhodesian economy. In !965, tobacco exports were worth £37 million per annum. ("A Matter of Weeks rather than Months" by J R T Wood, Trafford Publishers, 2012)
