Name/Title
1965/Chalmers: Sir Evan CampbellDescription
Evan Campbell, High Commissioner for Rhodesia (appointed 1964), with whom Andrew Chalmers was closely connected. Photograph from "The Golden Weed" by Peter Mack, for the Andrew Chalmers centenary 1865-1965.
In "The Golden Weed", Peter Mack writes that the founder and chairman of the Tobacco Export Promotion Council, formed in 1958, was Evan Campbell, "who had long experience as an important tobacco grower and who made a name for himself in tobacco association work". (p.22)
In 1965, Evan Campbell was sacked as High Commissioner by Ian Smith, the Prime Minister of Rhodesia, because he did not support UDI. Prior to that, he had been very involved in the discussions with the British government which had been trying to find (and afterwards continued to try to find) a conciliatory agreement with the Rhodesian leadership.
Evan Campbell died in 1980.
