1971/Chalmers: Joe (Peter) to Daphne

Name/Title

1971/Chalmers: Joe (Peter) to Daphne

Scope and Content

Written on 23 September 1971 not long before the separation of Marion and Peter Mack, which took place in October/November that same year. The address is of the new Andrew Chalmers branch in Wilson, North Carolina. The previous address had been Rocky Mount, North Carolina, when Andrew Chalmers (USA) was set up in 1963. Bill Pretlove, the Vice President, was the one who together with Dennis Munn blocked a very underhand deal which Peter Mack was trying to do with the sale of Mashonaland Tobacco (see Robin Mills's notes on his brother-in-law). Commodore is the American airman who used to visit Little Kendals during the war. The reference to him and his crew pranging the tree at LK (Little Kendals) refers to when his aircraft lopped off the top of a tree because of flying too low and too close to the house. Monica (Peter's half-sister) was at home at the time and the aircraft lopped the tree close to her bedroom window when she was in the room. "Cholo windfall" seems to refer to some money Daphne has received connected with the Cholo Highlands Tea Estates (previously Nyasaland but since 1964 Malawi) which also belonged to Andrew Chalmers.
