1974/Hughes: Humphrey's graveDescription
Humphrey, Dom Anselm Hughes, died on 8 October 1974 aged 85 years. He had been a monk for 51 years. He was buried in the monks' graveyard at Nashdom.
These photographs of his cross and the neglected graveyard in later years were taken by his great-nephew Andrew Mills, 23 March 2015.
The Benedictine community, whose fortunes had been declining since the Jubilee high-point in 1964,, left Nashdom for Elmore, near Newbury, in September 1987. "Elmore Abbey" was a much less grand property. However, the community continued to decline and in 2010 Elmore was also given up as only three monks remained.
It is as well that Humphrey did not live to see the ruin of the community to which he had dedicated his life.
Nashdom was acquired by a developer who planned to create a health spa, but eventually it was converted into luxury flats in 1997.
