Name/Title

1980/Marion: Cliff House, Southwold

Description

At Marion's house, Cliff House, Southwold, at the front overlooking the sea. This would be shortly after the Edmuns family left Rhodesia for good, having had to leave most of their assets behind them. L-R: Front row - Kris Johnston, Barbara Mack holding Cath Johnston, David Mack, Karen Edmuns (possibly holding a cat), Trixie Edmuns, Marion Mack, Alan's mother Florrie Jhnston Alan Johnston Back row - one of the two young men is possibly Michael Edmuns, the other unknown; on the far right, is possibly John Edmuns. Trixie, Karen and Michael came to the UK first. John followed on possibly about 6 weeks later, having stayed behind to clear things up. According to Barbara, Trixie was very worried about him, and also about her oldest daughter Delia, her husband Neil and their two children, who came sometime later than the rest and therefore are not in this photograph. JMG notes (April 2026): "Michael, who had been in the Rhodesian Bush War, had been very traumatised by it. His family were very careful around him; the bad memories that were afflicting him could not be talked about. About this time, Richard told me a story of them walking together in Southwold and Michael diving for cover on the pavement because a car had backfired. Michael worked for a while in the pub just round the corner from Cliff House. The landlady fell in love with him, and he with her, and she left her husband, the landlord, and eloped with him. She was dark-haired and attractive, and Michael was rather handsome. They moved to Spain, and lived there together until he died of cancer." Barbara remembers that Karen and David were briefly engaged.
