Family tree for the Hesketts and the Jensens, drawn up by Marion sometime in the 1980s. Both Karen Jensen (Nana) and Ted Heskett (Pompom) had very large families with high child mortality.
It seems unlikely that five of the Jensen children died in 1918, but family lore always remembered the loss of Peggy and Hugo in a diphtheria epidemic of that year.
The Oxford University Vaccine Knowledge Project gives the following information about cases and deaths from diphtheria in 1918 (the deaths of the Jensen children) and 1919 (Billie Mack's death):
