1909 – D WOMEN’S MISSIONARY SOCIETY “POVERTY SOSHUL”
This original invitation depicts a mock social gathering by elite Christian giving to aid poverty. By incorporating intentional mis-spelling and mockery of upper class lifestyle and dress, those leading this effort hoped to have provide a social outing that would raise money to alleviate local poverty. The “mocking poor folks” invitation to this “Poverty Sochul” states:
“You air axed to a doins us folks air a goin to hav at the hum of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson, Tuesday evenin, November 19, at early candle liten.
Rules and Regulashuns:
1. Every woman who kums must wear a kaliker dress and apern, or somethin ekaly
Approperate, and leve their letle poughdle dorg to hum.
2. No gent with a biled shirt and dude koller wil be aloud to kum onless he pays a fine uv 5 cents. The rules will be enforced to the letter.
3. A competent komitee will interduce strangers and look after bashful fellers. Extra good kaughphy and sandwitches will be et frum ate to ten o’clock.

Black butes 1 cent, sigars in pocket 1 cen each, stove pipe hat 1 cent, chuing gum 1 cent, neck tie 1 cent, standup koller 2 cents, patent letter shuse 2 cents, for gent or boy with curled hair 1 cent.
