Description

1561 – A PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS – MAMMON Virgil Solis Sigmund Feyeraband – printer This is an original, early press print titled: “S. Lucas XVI Evangelium: Mammon” (The Biblical book of Luke, chapter 16). This is a 16th century German mannerist Old Testament leaf print with a fine wood-cut engraving. The print was published in Frankfurt, Germany and taken from a Luther Bible. Text is located on back of this leaf print. Feyeraban’s press in Frankfurt was the first serious competition for the original Luther publication presses in Wittenberg. Martin Luther encouraged Bible illustrations (as opposed to the austere Calvinist bibles) to allow the illiterate to appreciate and understand Bible passages. Handmade, laid paper, of Gothic type. Language is German. This engraving was known as the “Bible of Palatine”, as is was recorded as being commissioned by Count Palatine. Artist Solis died in 1562 of the plague. Two subjects: the parable of the wasteful steward, and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Note the Renaissance-style border with frog, moth, locusts, and fruit in architectural scrolls. Signed in plate with the artist’s monogram. Image with classicizing border: 6 inches by 4.5 inches. Full leaf is 13 ¾ inches by 8 ¾ inches. Manifest Record: 350240799395
