Description

1726 - A ST. MARCELLA: WEALTHY ROMAN WIDOW MARTYR Johann Christian Muller, artist, Renz, engraver This copper-plate engraving was published in Schweidnitz in 1726. Saint Marcella was a Roman widow of the Christian faith who formed a guild group of noble ladies to live a life of austerity after the women referred to in Luke 8: 1 - 3. The caption contains a quote from Psalm 51:19, in German which translates, “A shattered spirit is an offering to the Lord.” Marcella was a Roman matron who was widowed after nine months of marriage. She refused to marry Cerealis, the Consul, and formed a support group of fellow noble ladies. She was tortured by the Goths looting Rome in 410 to force her to reveal the whereabouts of her wealth. She did not reveal the fact that she had long since given her wealth to the poor. She died shortly after her release from captivity in 410 A.D. The image size is 6 inches by 7 ¼ inches.
