Bernardo Passeri
Martin de Vos
This is an original copper plate engraving from a French edition of a significant Jesuit, Counter-reformation illustrated bible work. This is a fine example of Flemish art of the time period. Ignatius Loyola recommended to his friend, Jerome Nadal, to commission a series of engravings that would perspective and annotations to draw readers into the Biblical stories.
This was one of the first books where illustrations were commissioned to complement words as a primary method of teaching. The artists for this work were some of the best Flemish engravers of the day and included members of the famous Wierx family, C. de Mallory, and A. Collaert; all of which related to the Galle publishing house in Antwerp. Each plate has a picture with a legend in French that explains each scene so that everyone could understand its meaning. The image size is 5 ½ inches by 9 inches.
