1868 – B THE PAUPER’S STORY
This is an original w00d-cut engraving print. This is a fascinating, full-circle story depicted in Harper’s Weekly in February 1868. Titled “The Pauper’s Story”, the picture shows a typical poor and destitute person’s short life once arriving to the USA and attempting to live urbanely in a city.
The pauper finds their way off the immigrant boat into a tenement house, and unable to afford this meager living situation, eventually ends up at an Alms House and soon after, a funeral house in a casket. Though a sad depiction of events, common at the time, the picture educates large numbers of readers as to charity needs in the city.
The image size is 11 inches by 15 inches.
