1925 – A MORTGAGE BURNING SERVICE & AUTOMOBILE GIFT TO PASTOR
This is an original digital one-off reprint of a historic photo of a church congregation posing with their pastor. The picture shows their celebration event of paying off the mortgage of debt on their church. This is the High Street Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia and the church mortgage was paid on the 41st anniversary of the church, September 20th, 1925.
The photo is unique in that the congregation is an African American congregation. Additionally, the picture caption tells that the church has raised enough to also purchase a new automobile for their pastor! This is a rare moment and photo capture of a prominent event in American church stewardship. Image size is 8 inches by 10 inches.
