1873 – F VILLAGE SONG POSTCARD: “THE POOR HELPS THE POOR” The depicted image is of a wealthy couple arrogantly with heads held high walking directly past a poorer couple asking for help on Hospital Saturday. The limerick reads: “Tis Saturday noon in a big thoroughfare, Folks are collecting for hospitals there: Asking for coin that the needy may be Taken and nursed, and attended to free; Many’s the rich who pass by and give naught, But often it’s only for want of thought, Then comes the workfolk with clothes threadbare, Giving the mite that they scarce can spare.
