This is an interesting original pew rent receipt from a church in Philadelphia. Dated
September 10 and issued to Mr. Jon Penrose for 6 months. The Penrose family was a very prominent member of Philadelphia. This document required a 2 cent orange Internal Revenue stamp, or more commonly referred to as a bank check stamp. Bank check stamps were often used to help fund / finance Civil War debt.
