1857 – B BAPTIST SOCIETY PEW QUARTERLY TAX BILL
This is an original pew tax bill receipt from a Mr. Flinn, from Dorchester, Massachusetts, to the First Baptist Society for 3 month’s tax on pew number 54: Five dollars. No arrears show on the receipt. An interesting paragraph is also shown on this receipt, not common for the period: “N.B: for the convenience and accommodation of all concerned, and to facilitate the collection of taxes, the bills are left in the pews this day; and you are requested to enclose the amount with the bill in a wrapper (envelope) and deposit same in the box which will be carried around next Sabbath for that purpose; and the bills receipted will be left in the pew the week following. It is hoped that all will comply with this request.
“All pews are held liable to be sold for taxes, if not paid in six months after the same shall have become due thereon.”
