1882 – F NEW YORK CITY EASTER OFFERING IN A FASHIONABLE CHURCH
This is an original wood-cut engraving depicting a man and daughter giving to the offering in church. Dated April 8, 1882, page 108. The paper was illustrated by Frank Leslies, with art listed by “Hyde”. Accompanying the etching is a short paragraph.
“Easter Greetings and Easter Gifts come to us graciously. The heart is open to generous influences; it is indeed a season of joy and Thanksgiving. In our New York city churches, the theme is one of jubilation. And when the silent petition comes around in the form of the poor box, not one in the congregation, but will contribute an offering on sweet Easter day. In “swell” congregations, Gants de Suede with 6 buttons will “seek” for Gold in the recesses of monogrammed pocket books; in less magnificent edifices, horny hands will dig the “quarter” from pockets, not to heavily lined. At Easter, God’s poor must be remembered, and the widow’s mite jingle on the missionaries check.”
