This is an original antique copper-plate from a French edition, Jesuit, counter-Reformation illustrated work. The subject of this engraving is: The Parable of the prodigal son squandering wealth from Luke 15 verses 1 – 54. The purpose of this engraving and similar others was to do for religion what the scientists of the day were doing for science: use perspective and annotations / illustrations to draw the reader into Biblical stories as aids for daily meditations.
