Description

Slant-top writing desk originally belonged to Edmund Jennings Lee. He passed the desk to his eldest son, Edmund Jennings Lee, Jr., who brought the desk to Bedford plantation (West Virginia) when he moved there after marrying his wife, Henrietta Bedinger Lee. Top half of book case was destroyed in a fire when Union troops set the Bedford mansion ablaze during the Civil War. Bottom half of secretary bookcase, primary wood mahogany, secondary wood poplar. It has four large drawers on the bottom. Small drawers and nooks on top when writing board is down, otherwise slant-top. Pull ring is kept in a drawer. Eschutcheons are probably original. Feet have been replaced.
