Description

Round needlepoint fire screen on a tripod stand. Reportedly worked on by Sarah Lee, wife of Edmund Jennings Lee. The screen provides protection from the heat of nearby flames but also allows warmth to get through. This one is particularly large for the fireplace in the room. By the middle of the nineteenth century, it evolved into a favorite place for women to display their needlework. While it may not look like it, the screen is actually finished. Also numbered 61-01-02 by the Fairfax County Park Authority.
