Early 19th century black lacquer box with hand-painted scenes of life in China on exterior. Two tones of gold used, red visible in hairstyles. Box has several Chinese characters written in several places in and on the box (interior box lid, pin cushion clamp, behind bottom drawer). Claw feet. Original bone & ivory fittings inside. Imported from Canton and sold through European merchants. These boxes were commonly used for embroidery and tatting.
