The belief that the fashion industry could no longer dictate which styles would be fashionable for the season had been increasing over the past decades. Haute couture (high fashion) had been replaced as the source for inspiration by luxury fashion, industrial fashion, and street styles. The booming economy made the desire for high economic status attainable for many young people leading to new subcultures of yuppies and preppies. No one silhouette or skirt length predominated, fashion silhouettes included large shoulders, collarless bodices, shirtwaist, dropwaist, and sweater dresses, and tailored suits.
