Description

James A. Moody Post Office Dedication cover postmarked on October 19, 1957, at the James Moody Station in Victoria, Texas.

Context

Facsimiles of postage stamps issued in 1861 on authority of the Confederate Government by James A. Moody, first postmaster of Victoria, Texas, for whom Victoria's newest post office station is named. Originals of this stamp are very rare and worth in excess of $1,000.00. Only eight Texas postmasters were given authority to issue their own stamps. Victoria, Gonzales, Goliad, Beaumont, Helena, Halletsville, Independence, and Richmond. Mr. James Moody served as postmaster of Victoria from 1838 to 1865 and had the distinction of serving under three flags: Texas, United States, and Confederate. These duplicates were created to commemorate the dedication of the James Moody Station. They were printed by the Victoria Advocate which printed the originals for Mr. Moody from plates made of leather and wood.
