Mexican Stick Seller [Cabinet Card]

Description

Circa 1895 cabinet card by John Bushong of a Mexican Stick Seller in El Paso.

Context

Street vendors with bulkier goods found other ways to offer their services. During the nineteenth century, people often kept their horses, mules, goats, sheep, and even cattle, especially milk cows, in close proximity to their homes. This young man loaded his donkey with sticks and rode slowly through the city neighborhoods, selling it businesses and households who used it to make fires. He was a type of moving street vendor who made his rounds every day on the streets of El Paso.
