Name/Title

Theodore Schleuning [Billhead]

Description

August 2, 1869 billhead from Theodore Schleuning, Wholesale and Retail Dealer, to Mr. W. A. Menger for two bottles of Roederer Champagne from Reims, France.

Context

Railroads did not reach San Antonio until 1877, therefore these bottles of champagne had to travel by steamship from France to New York, to New Orleans, Galveston, or Indianola, to be carried overland by ox or wagon to Schleuning's two story grocery store which also sold wine, liquors, and cigars on the northeast corner of Military Plaza. All of this so the Menger Hotel could carry out its pledge of serving the finest fare.
