This example was recovered from near St. Augustine, Florida in the mid-1980s by a colleague. It dates to approximately 1500 to 1650. This solid silver doublet button is a rare find in this complete condition.
Note: the gold reflection in the photos is an overhead light. The button is solid silver.
This type of clothing button would have been worn by the first military expeditions sent to colonize Spanish Florida.
