Name/Title

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo [Stereoview]

Description

Henry A. Doerr stereograph of the back of the Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo. Dated 1872 - 1875, due to the yellow, round-cornered mounts with a small "H. Doerr, Photographer, San Antonio Texas'' uniformly stamped in the center of the back.

Context

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, one of the five Spanish missions in San Antonio, was founded in the early eighteenth century as a result of a shift of missionary effort from East Texas to South Texas. Beginning about 1813, troops were stationed intermittently at the mission, causing considerable damage. In December 1868, storms destroyed part of the north wall of the church and the dome, and the roof collapsed. This picture highlights the disrepair.
