Black and white press photograph of the "Old Gengenworth Home."Context
George Andrew Gegenworth came to Texas just before the Civil War, enlisted in the 5th Texas, Hood's Brigade at the outbreak, and served with distinction until the surrender. At the Battle of Chickamauga, he was wounded in the cheek, the ball taking away a part of his tongue, causing a slight impediment in his speech. After the war, in the 1870s, he built this house, placed high off the ground to avoid Colorado River floods and containing a decorated ceiling in the parlor.
The house passed to his son, George Gegenworth, one of Columbus' leading business men as a dealer in grains and groceries.
