In 1907, Louis Lipsitz moved to Dallas, where he established and oversaw the operations of the Harris-Lipsitz Company, a wholesale dry-goods firm, and the Harris Lumber Company, a wholesale lumber establishment. In 1914 Lipsitz became managing partner of the renamed Harris-Lipsitz Lumber Company. The growth of this firm under his direction established his reputation as a successful businessman and led to his participation in a number of other Dallas enterprises, including the Lyon-Gray Lumber Company, the Trinity Lumber Company, and the Oak Cliff Lumber Company. He also was president of the Chronister Lumber Company of Forest, Texas. Lipsitz was a member of the board of directors of the Realty Trust Company of Dallas, the Dallas Chamber of Commerce (of which he was president in 1915), the United States Chamber of Commerce, and the State Fair of Texas. In addition, he served as vice president of the American Exchange National Bank.
The business of J.B. Shaw & Sons, Dry Goods, located on the east side of the public square in Sherman, dates back to 1876, when J.B. Shaw came to Sherman from Jefferson, Texas, and entered the dry goods store of E.F. Pittman as a salesman. In 1884 Mr. Shaw engaged in business for himself, the firm name at first being Shaw, Johnson and Durham, and in 1890 the name was changed to J.B. Shaw and Sons. Mr. Shaw and his two sons, Marion and Allen, having become the sole owners.Category
