Walter Crosby’s cachet cover posted aboard USS Texas (BB 35) on October 27, 1931 using the blue 5-cent stamp featuring Theodore Roosevelt and mailed to Walter Crosby “Cover Specialist.” Mail clerk applied the ship’s embossed seal on the cover. This cover was mailed to Crosby, presumably for his personal collection.Context
America honored the United States Navy on Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday because he was considered the “Father of the Modern Steel Navy.” Observed annually from 1922 through 1949. Battleship Texas celebrated this Navy Day at home in San Pedro, California.
