Context

The 'Brown Bess' India Pattern was the standard British infantry musket from 1797–1854. In 1833, the British Ordnance still held some 440,000 India Pattern arms, 18 years after manufacture had ceased, so the sale of these over-stocks was an excellent opportunity for the Mexican government to obtain sturdy and effective firearms. There are 10 locks and lockplates for an India pattern musket in the Presidio Collection.
