Description

Number 8, French 7 3/4" plate, transfer printed in black on a white earthenware body. It pictures the "Surrender Of Puebla". A double band of French Blue lining borders a raised shell form embossed rim with the illustration in the center of the plate. Showing the mark used in the 1800s, Creil et Montereau, Deposé, LM & Cie. for Lebeuf, Milliet & Co. (LM & Co.). No chipping, but a 2-inch hairline to the left of the graphic (pictured).

Context

The siege of Puebla took place from March to May 1863, during the Mexican expedition. It pitted the French army against Mexican Republican forces and ended with a French victory and the delivery of the city by the Mexicans on May 17, 1863.
