This cover is addressed to Dr. L.E. Griffith, who was intimately associated with Sam Houston (Griffith's first patient after he arrived in Texas and is credited with saving Houston’s leg after the Battle of San Jacinto); Thomas Rusk (Griffith bought Rusk’s old home and the land that is now Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches), James Pinckney Henderson, William Beck Ochiltree, Three-Legged Willie, and numerous other pioneers who helped shape the history of the state of Texas. Dr. Griffith described these relationships and memories in an interview for Brown’s Indian Wars & Pioneers of Texas, 1896 - the same year as this cover.Category
