Description

Stereo photograph of the north side of Main Plaza in San Antonio, Texas. There are several store fronts, including Cohen & Koenigheim, with carriages lining the area in front of the shops. A wagon loaded with barrels or casks is in front of the saloon, and wreaths and garlands hang from the front of the saloon. The building on the far right has an awning with the number 307 and the name R. Thompson & Co. (with a first initial hidden by a pole). A circular sign in the shape of a pocket watch hangs from the pole. The sign for a job printing establishment is visible on the second floor. White Elephant saloon is in the center.

Context

Military importance of the Main Plaza declined in Republic of Texas Era (1836-45) but place came to be one of the liveliest spots in Texas. A busy market, it teemed with noisy vendors of vegetables, fresh eggs, chili peppers, and live chickens. Oxcarts and wagons stood bulging with hay, hides, and wood. Strolling guitarists, tourists, and girls selling songbirds mingled with pickpockets and other characters. Frequently cock fights were held.
