Description

She is wearing a dark colored dress with buttons down the front of the bodice and four larger, decorative buttons or medallions across the top. She has a small, ruffled white collar, a watch chain, earrings and a wedding band. Her left elbow is resting on a the back of a studio chair, and she has a piece of paper in that hand. She is looking to the side of the camera and situated in front of a painted studio backdrop. The back of the card mount includes an ornate design with the name and information of the photographer, J. L. Mertins. Handwritten on the back is the name "Marietta Richardson Kelley."

Context

Marietta was the daughter of Texas Ranger and Confederate veteran Riley Dennis Richardson. Riley Dennis Richardson had been a member of the 1860 band of Texas Rangers who had liberated Cynthia Ann Parker and whose family's land in Jack County had been confiscated by Union troops for the construction of Fort Richardson.
