Context

In 1867, Colonel John Garland James moved his family to Bastrop, Texas, where James was president of Texas Military Institute in 1868. He was superintendent, business manager, and professor of philosophy and mathematics; his father and brothers, Charles and Fleming Wills James, assisted him in the enterprise. He moved his school to Austin and conducted it there from 1870 through 1879.
