Gertrude Dyches, daughter of Wiliam Dyches and Tabitha "Tabbie" Allan May Dyches, was born September 24, 1880. Her family owned a 1,000 acre ranch on Willis Creek in Granger, Texas. When Gertrude was nine years old, her father was killed by two horse thieves - this photograph was taken about four years later. About 1900, she attended Add-Ran College at Thorp Spring, Texas. Per the Williamson County Deed Book 118, page 184, on February 5, 1906, she joined her mother and siblings in executing a deed for 54.5 acres as "part of the Josiah Dyches Survey." She was an outstanding horsewoman and an expert markswoman with a pistol. Two of her brothers would become Texas Rangers.
