Context

El Paso, Texas; and Del Norte, Old Mexico, are situated on the borders and divided by the Rio Grande River, and are joined by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, Southern Pacific Texas Transcontinental and Mexican Central Railroads. Del Norte is built after the Spanish style of architecture of "adobe," and is one of the oldest towns in the republic. Its streets scenes are very comical and amusing to an American. Its population is estimated at 7,500, and during the month of December "The Feast of Our Lady of Guadeloupe" is held, consisting of gambling, dancing and bull-fights. El Paso is composed mostly of Americans, and is a thriving town, the winters being by far the pleasantest time of the year.
