Name/Title
cast, brass-alloy doublet buttonContext
Rob Merz meticulously removed that old wax, then the encrustation to reveal the delicate features of this cast, brass-alloy button. As a former museum conservator, he used only museum-prescribed mechanical cleaning processes (never chemicals - ever). No final preservative has been used (not needed).
Early doublet buttons of this type are extremely rare to find in Spanish Florida (early examples like this are almost impossible to find in Europe, where they were made), and they are a signature calling card of the earliest Spanish expeditions of the 1520s through 1580s.
It measures approximately 13mm.
