Cover from "Clerk of / Madison County" (on verso) addressed to “N. H. and J. R. Davis / Attorneys at Law / Montgomery / Texas.” Postmarked "MADISONVILLE / FEB 21 / TEX." Hand written on verso: "Recd March 4th 1871."

Context

Nathaniel Hart Davis, pioneer and county official, moved to Montgomery, Texas in 1840. He served as county attorney, commissioner, and chief justice of Montgomery County, and as judge of the Thirteenth Judicial District from 1867 to 1870. At the time of this cover, Madisonville had developed into an agricultural trade center with a population of ninety-eight, with slow mail routes - this cover took 11 days to travel 51 miles!
