Clara "Cassie" Emma Fentress Nugent Powers was born in 1866 to Populist leader Thomas Lewis Nugent and Clara Hardeman in the early 1860s. Cassie married Joseph Carroll Powers, but passed away tragically at the age of 22 in 1888. Her father served in the Texas Constitutional Convention of 1875 and it is believed that the death of Cassie was a large factor in him retiring from poltics in July 1888 and moving to El Paso.Category
