The sender, James Hervey Raymond, acted in a civil servant capacity for Texas from 1841 to 1858. In 1860, Raymond entered the banking business in Austin with the firm of John M. Swisher and Company, which in 1861 became Raymond & Swisher and in 1868 Raymond & Whitis. The recipient, John Leal Haynes, a military and political leader, was the collector of customs at Brownsville at the time of this cover.Category
