John Pride Jones and Franklin Smith opened a store in the community of Old Smithville in 1867, and nine years later a post office was established with Jones as postmaster. In May 1879, Smithville was described as a thriving village, but in 1887, with the coming of the Bastrop and Taylor Railway, the community of seventeen families moved two miles west to meet it.Category
