Jose Francisco Ruiz, born in San Fernando de Bexar in 1783, first saw service in the cause of Texas' freedom as a soldier of the Republic of the West in the catastrophic Battle of Medina. He fled to the United States, returning in 1822 to become an officer of the Mexican army, commandant of Ft. Tenoxtitlan on the Brazos, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a member of the Senate of the first Texas Congress.Category
