In 1867 Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin and Palmetto Leaves, bought a cottage in Mandarin. For the next seventeen winters, she welcomed tourists debarking from the steamers along the St. Johns River. This live oak covered with moss is what tourists would see.
