Circa 1873-1877 stereoview by W.H. Metcalf of The Alamo. Written on the back in pencil: "Church of the Alamo. San Antonio Texas Founded May 8, 1744. Assaulted March 6, 1836 by 6,000 Mexicans under Santa Anna. Upon the third attempt, the walls were scaled and the garrison numbering 188 men all told, massacred including Colonel Travis, Colonel Jim Bowie, and Colonel Davy Crockett. Of the Mexicans, 520 lay dead and an equal number wounded."Context
The Alamo Church is one of the most photographed structures in Texas. An obscure photographer named W.H. Metcalf operated in San Antonio during the mid-1870s. He took a number of scenic stereoviews in the area, and they are quite scarce. This is the only stereoview of the Alamo to surface.Category
