Mid-to-late 1700s Spanish artillery button, hand cast, has a deeply concave reverse, is made of bronze alloy, and has an integral shank with drilled eyelet.Context
These buttons are known to have been used by Spanish Colonial artillery units and are known as the Presidio type. They have been recovered from sites such as St. Augustine and Pensacola. This button was recovered from Pensacola.
Pewter military buttons in any of the known styles are rare because they failed easily and were therefore not frequently used. Of the thousands of Spanish buttons, and dozens of the Presidio artillery type, this is the only known example.
