Name/Title
Spanish Military Doublet Button Menendez Expedition St. Augustine 1665 #3 (118)Description
Extremely rare Turkish pewter doublet button form the 1665 Menedez expedition to St. Augustine. As rare as the alloy Turkish knot-style buttons are, these pewter examples are the rarest. This is because they were low cost and low quality, so were not preferred by most conquistadores (who were all nobles and from means). This button was cast in bronze alloy and then hand finished by the craftsman. Originally, it would have been gilded in gold.Context
This button was recovered by a former colleague in the mid-1980s.
