Description

13 3/4” serving platter from the "Texian Campaigne" pattern depicting various military scenes in blue with borders that alternate images of the Greek Goddess Ceres and a vignette of draped flags over a drum. Marked on the back "TEXIAN CAMPAIGNE" within a cartouche, with makers' initials "JB" at the base of the fan shaped cartouche. The word Texian is spelled in the English manner, which was the original form of the word Texan.

Context

Texian Campaigne is an earthenware pottery, decorated with hand-pulled transfer prints, which was introduced by James Beech about 1837-1840, to mark the Texas Revolution (1835-1836) or first Texian Campaigne, when Texas achieved its independence.
